1999 SPLENDID ISOLATION 3 h Foto / Ki Jug Hug
The title is an expression from the British Empire. I have chosen it because of its aptness for this project. It also can be associated with the isolated beauty of masks of certain African tribes, or (politically isolated) masks used by the Klu Klux Klan. To cut the map the way I do should raise associations with borders and landmark lines on a map. It also comments on the (almost) unbearable slowliness of bureaucracy in the USA or Germany. The pieces I am cutting out of the paper mask will draw the spectators attention to the from cut out of the mask. I am cutting a piece of paper with a razor blade in front of my face.
